The First Pedal test of the machine

Road Test 1

My name is Brian Slayton better known as the Funguy. I am a kinetic sculpture racer in Humboldt County, California. What is a kinetic sculpture? Well a kinetic sculpture in a human powered vehicle covered in some type of artwork. The vehicle must be able to traverse pavement, sand, mud and water. I race in "The Arcata to Ferndale Kinetic Grand Championship" on Memorial Day Weekend every year. This will be my 15th year participating in the kinetic sculpture race and for the first time I am building a kinetic sculpture machine from the ground up with the help of my good friend Joe Lance.

Also, thanks out to my Kinetic Professors: Ken Beidleman, Duane Flatmo and the ever fabulous June Moxon for all their advice and support!!!

AND, super special thanks and love out to my wife and kinetic widow Deena for her love and support during this kinetic madness season.  Everyone please make sure to tell her how awesome she is!!

  • Sponsor Update Sorry it's been a while since I posted any pictures, will try to do soon. I have been working on installing the drive system and its going to look cool soon. Unfortunately, we have not been able to find a sponsor and all the good prospects have said no. Unfortunately I am running out of money and am worried about being able to pay for the registration fees. I definitely will not be able to afford to put any art on the machine so it looks like I may have to pull the old funguy sculpture down from the ceiling at the kinetic lab and mount it on the machine and by scabbing off old rusty parts should be ...

Joe and Aaron also worked on the tire tread we're attaching to the big rear wheels. Aaron did some cutting and Joe finished screwing the tire tread to left rear tire. Hopefully we'll be doing a second road test this weekend.

  • Engineerin the Steerin & The Discovery Channel Wow, alot has happened since I last posted! Not sure where to start. First of all you'll find new pics below. The front end has been fabricated , Ackermann arms and tie rod attached (this makes the wheels turn in unison). We had our first road test! We hooked a rope up to the tie rods and Duane gave me a push and I rode around the street. Apparently its a kinetic tradition to take your machine for a "push" as soon as you attach the tie rod.  Of course no seats or pedals are attached but it was still fun if not hilarious with my big butt perched atop a two-by-four spanning the frame. Joe even took ...

Sorry, its been awhile since I posted and I have lots of pictures for your amusement.....Here's the tire retread material purchased today, 72 feet!!!                             After work I made the first weld on my front end. Here's a sneak peak at some of my special bribes, shhhhhhh... Here were starting to figure out where to put the pilots. Here I've taken the frame with the rear axle mounts all welded up, and stood it on its ass-end,an standin on a cross bar.                                                   Joe here, tryin to swoop his shades down for the photo, not quick enough Joe!Here's our good buddy and long time kinetickinaut, showing that he bleeds red blood......and a peek ...
